Nadiad is the historic Charotar-region district HQ of Kheda — globally consequential as the birthplace of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (born 1875), the "Iron Man of India" and founding architect of India's territorial integration as first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. The town hosts Santram Mandir founded by Sant Shree Santram Maharaj in 1816 (one of Gujarat's major Hindu pilgrimage centres) and was the home of Govardhanram Tripathi, author of Saraswatichandra — among the greatest Gujarati literary novels. Nadiad sits at the heart of the Charotar-Leuva-Patidar belt, one of Gujarat's richest agricultural regions, and 30 km from the Amul-HQ town of Anand alongside the historic Kheda Satyagraha-1918 site 15 km away.
